135-Switzer Mesa

South of Cedar Avenue and Buffalo Park sits McMillan Mesa and below it to the west is Switzer Canyon – this Flagstaff MLS area is called “Switzer Mesa,” an otherwise unknown geographic point. McMillan Mesa homes overlook Flagstaff Medical Center and Downtown Flagstaff to the west and Coconino High School and Sunnyside on the east. “The Mesa,” as Flagstaffians call it, extends south to Route 66. Below McMillan Mesa is Switzer Canyon, which is lined with custom homes, an apartment complex, medical offices, commercial businesses and car dealerships.

The northwest portion of The Mesa is in the process of being developed and already has some new, occupied homes. To get to the existing residential areas take Ponderosa Drive up the hill from Turquoise Avenue. There are also new extensions of Pine Cliff Drive and Gemini Road with access from Cedar Avenue. You'll also find the Basis charter school, a senior living center, Flagstaff fire department station and medical facilities in the newer area of the Mesa.

The first set of homes was built atop The Mesa in the 1970s. Construction proved so difficult that, for many years, the subdivision sat in a lonely spot with beautiful views and streets dead-ending at open fields. An apartment complex was added across from a municipal neighborhood park. Then higher-end homes were built on the hillside along Ponderosa Drive – five minutes from the hospital and six minutes to downtown made the construction difficulties a minor factor for these custom homebuilders. In the late-1990s, two sets of townhomes and two streets of single family homes completed The Mesa’s residential area for nearly a decade. Road infrastructure has been placed just south of Cedar Avenue for for what will be a mixed residential, commercial, office, light-industrial area.

The city will maintain 30 acres of open space/event/park area and the urban trail that crosses The Mesa and connects to Buffalo Park via a footbridge over Cedar Avenue.
