Things to Do in Flagstaff This Weekend

Flagstaff Halloween danceAutumn brings crisp nights and warm afternoons to Flagstaff, with an abundance of things to do, indoors and out.  Enjoy the weekend’s Halloween-themed events – a week early!

On Friday and Saturday, Canyon Movement Company presents its annual Halloween concert, Dusk to Dawn in the Fifth Dimension: Dances for Halloween, with guests Velocity Dance Company and Eric Walden. Fun music and costumes assist this noted dance company as they present a lively, fun, and sometimes creepy concert for everyone. Dances are created by individual choreographers in the group with story-telling woven into the dances, recounting nightmares, the boogey man, robots, demons within us, and more. Eric Walden will be sharing his theatrical talents as he tells tales about the unknown and scary.   At Coconino High School, 7:30 pm. each evening.  General admission $10, students $6.  $1 discount if dressed in a costume.

The annual Fantastic FSO, Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra Halloween costume concert returns with spectacular orchestral showpieces on Friday evening — Franz Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz, Antonin Dvorak’s Midday Witch, and Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.  At NAU’s Ardrey Auditorium, 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Museum of Northern Arizona comes to life for Celebraciones de la Gente and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), an ancient Mesoamerican holiday held throughout Mexico, Latin America, and the Southwest. More than a dozen Flagstaff families create ofrendas (altars) to display in the Museum’s courtyard. Learn about Day of the Dead traditions and the role of Hispanics in northern Arizona’s history.Enjoy mariachi music, arts, and storytelling. Learn about migration and the blending of cultural traditions. The festival’s insightful programming, music, and dances are produced in partnership with Nuestra Raices (Our Roots), a local grassroots organization of Flagstaff’s Hispanic pioneer families.  9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. each day.  Regular museum admission price — $10 adults, $9 seniors (65+), $7 students (with ID), $6 American Indians, and $6 youth (10-17). Children 10 and under are free.

Also on Friday evening there’s A Nightmare on Aspen Street, as Circus Bacchus presents a night of entertainment for adults. Horror, comedy, music, burlesque, stilts and a stunning display of aerial stunts will be on stage for one performance only. The main stage show will be followed by a fire performance.  At the Orpheum Theater, $12 in advance, $15 at the door.  8:30 – 11:30 p.m.

The Flagstaff Mall & Marketplace sponsors a Halloween Spooktacular Costume Contest on Saturday for those ages 0 through 13.  Enter to show your costume on the runway and a chance to take home a prize! Take fun photos and selfies at our photo booth before and after the contest.  Registration begins at 11:00 a.m., contest begins at 12:00 p.m., with judging and awards at 2:00 p.m. Put together a creative, spooky, funny, amazing costume.  Facemasks and face paint are allowed during the duration of the event. Masks must be removed after event has finished.  Costumes must be G-rated.  Awards in several age brackets will include “Most Creative,” and “Audience Favorite.”  Parent or guardian must be present for registration.  Event is free.

Flagstaff’s annual Zombie Prom is at the Green Room (15 N. Agassiz St.) on Saturday night.  Just stumble or crawl until you hear the amazing music at the Green Room, where the undead have been celebrating prom night for the past decade.  You may just rip a limb off dancing to selections by veteran DJs Johnny, Emmett, Rey, and Marty.  See the crowning of the king and queen.  $5 admission at the door.  9:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.

The Flagstaff City – Coconino County Public Library in partnership with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra presents Stories to Life: A Little Nightmare Music, at the Coconino Center for the Arts on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.  Enjoy the ethereal sounds of the Elden Brass Quintet and short stories read by spoken-word artists, guaranteed to scare.  Admission is free.

Hitchin’ Post Stables celebrates Pumpkins in the Pines through October 31st with a festival of fall activities for the family.  Ride along on a horse-drawn hay ride, seek out the perfect pumpkin or get lost then found in the hay maze.
