It’s your opportunity to buy unique items from Flagstaff’s new entrepreneur cooperative market, featuring local crafters and artisans. The Market of Dreams (Mercado de los Sueños) creates opportunity for cooperative entrepreneurship, individual growth, and the stimulation of local economics and grassroots community leadership. Also this weekend, the Theatrikos Theatre Company’s TheatriKIDS group presents Thorton Wilder’s Our Town, frequently named as the greatest American play of the 20th century. It shows the little peculiarities and heroic nature of everyday life in a small WASPish New Hampshire town. A different cast will star in each performance. TheatriKIDS, founded in 2003, is the primary youth education component of Theatrikos, for children and teens, ages 7 to 17. Tickets are $10. Local outdoor and recreation equipment outfitters are sponsoring the Northern Arizona Beer & Gear Expo on Friday. It will be a lively evening of supplier samplings, gear demos, and live music. Participating outfitters include Apsen Sports, Babbitt Backcountry, Flagstaff Sports Exchange, Four Seasons Outfitters, Mountain Sports, Peace Surplus, and Wet Dreams. Enjoy samplings from craft breweries. Entertainment by Chuck Hall, a long time Flagstaff favorite. He’s been entertaining throughout Arizona and the Southwest with his high-energy electric blues for over 40 years. At The Orpheum, starts at 6:00 p.m. $12 – $15. On Saturday evening, Flagstaff’s Center for Indigenous Music and Culture presents the Los Angeles-based Liän Ensemble, fusing Persian musical heritage with contemporary jazz. Enjoy this mystical world music composed of traditional and folk melodies and instruments. Admission is $15, $10 for student (with ID), and free for children. Have Coffee & Hot Chocolate with a Ranger on Saturday morning, the first fun-filled event planned during Walnut Canyon National Monument’s centennial year. Meet with a park ranger and learn about the lifestyles of the Sinagua people that once inhabited Walnut Canyon. 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. at the Walnut Canyon Visitor Center. Admission fee is $5 per person, 16 years and older. Entrance is at the end of a 3-mile road at I-40 exit 204, approximately 7.5 miles east of Flagstaff.
Also on Saturday, Willow Bend Environmental Education Center presents a honey tasting event – Raw, Wild and Local. Take a honey tasting “flight” from the Verde River to the San Francisco Peaks! Participants will learn about the distinct places and diverse floral sources of several different hives and their honey, and how differences in the land create a honey’s unique taste. 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. The event is free, however a $5 donation is suggested. On Saturday afternoon, enjoy the work of Museum of Northern Arizona artist-in-residence David Christiana. He will talk about his body of work and the idea of creating a portrait of place – fragments and details of the 30-mile ribbon of road between Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments in black and white illustrations. 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Free with regular museum admission.
On Sunday, the Northern Arizona Orchestras celebrate student achievement, featuring concerto competition winners and a performance of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring – NAU Symphony and Chamber Orchestra: Celebrations, featuring guest conductor Jacob Harrison. At NAU’s Ardrey Auditorium, 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $8 general, $5 seniors, free for NAU students with ID and those 17 and under.
